Unveiled
Spring 2017
My senior project, Unveiled , aims to engage with the presence of mental health issues on the St. Olaf campus. After private interviews regarding their experiences with mental health, I collaborated with participants to best represent an aspect of their story in photographic form, accompanied by text describing each individual's unique insights. Individuals (with permission) have intentionally been identified as a first step in allowing them to own their experience, by depicting this aspect of their lives as meaningful and nothing to be ashamed of. I chose to represent these stories in the format of an Instagram post to extend this work and examine how our carefully crafted social media personas –– as expressed by our tendency to primarily portray the highlight-reel of our lives –– play a role in the stigmatization of mental health issues; Does expressing mental health issues via social media broaden the scope of this platform? Does it spoil the intentions of this platform? Are expressing mental health issues via social media an effective way to begin destigmatizing individual’s struggles?

about.
Shalee Rose Murphy is graduating from St. Olaf College with a B.A. in Studio Art and Psychology. She is originally from Seattle, Washington and will be returning home for the year to work and gain experience before applying to M.A. programs in Art Therapy. She primarily works with two-dimensional art mediums, namely, watercolor painting, graphite drawing, and photography (both digital and film). She hopes to continue creating as a means to grapple with life's ups and downs through artistic expression. In her free time, Shalee enjoys drinking tea, listening to music, rock climbing, and exploring the Pacific Northwest with friends, family, and her two Carine Terrier pups, Daisy and Mozart.
